Russia’s presence in the Arctic has increased greatly under Putin, both militarily and economically. A Russian expedition led by Artur Chilingarov called Arktika 2007 planted a Russian flag on the seabed beneath the North Pole in August 2007. This substantiated Russia’s 2001 claim submission. In July 2011 the government publically announced its plans for the creation of two brigades to be placed in the Arctic and in June 2008 the Russian Military announced in June 2008 that it would augment the operational radius of its Northern Fleet submarines. As it gets rather dark there in Winter, the brigades may need e27 led light bulbs with them!

Floating nuclear power plants with be constructed to provide power to Russian Arctic coastal cities as part of the restoration of nuclear industry to Russia. The government also plans to construct the world’s very first ice-resistant oil platform which will also be the world’s very first offshore Arctic platform! This will be located in the Prirazlomnoye field, an offshore oilfield in the Pechora Sea.
